Michaelerkirche, ViennaThe Romanesque St. Michael's Church (Michaelerkirche) is one of the oldest churches in Vienna and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. St. Michael's Church was the parish church of the Austrian Imperial Court and its crypt holds the tombs of the rich and powerful.
It is one of the city's oldest Romanesque buildings, it served as the official parish church for the nearby Hofburg Imperial Palace, and it features a crypt with naturally mummified remains. Over its long history, spanning more than eight centuries, the church has incorporated a medley of architectonic styles. It blends late Romanesque and early Gothic structural roots from 1220-1240 with later Baroque and Neo-classical additions.
It stands directly across from the Hofburg Palace and historically accommodated court parishioners, emperors, and nobility. The baroque pipe organ here is Vienna's largest, dates back to 1714 and Haydn used to play here.
On December 10, 1791, parts of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famous Requiem were performed for the first time during his funeral.
