The main station (Hauptbahnhof) in Zurich is the largest railway station in Switzerland and a major rail hub. There are train services to major stations in Switzerland as well as international connections to Germany, Austria, France and Italy. The statue and monumental fountain in front of the station is of Alfred Escher (1819-1892) a Swiss politian and railway pioneer. The neo-Renaissance station building dates from the 1870s and incorporates a Tourist Information Office, shops, cafes and restaurants. Zurich HB is also the terminus of the city's S-Bahn lines, bus routes, trams and taxi services.

Italy (EuroCity) direct routes to Milan (3.5 hours), with connections onward to Venice, Florence, and Rome.
