Bern city skyline

Bern (Berne) is the capital of Switzerland with a population of over 120,000 inhabitants. The Old Town of Bern is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bern's historic Old Town is known for its six kilometres of medieval arcades, or Lauben, which form one of Europe's longest covered shopping promenades. The city is surrounded on three sides by the turquoise waters of the Aare River, where locals enjoy swimming during the summer. Its streets are also lined with colourful 16th-century fountains, while the famous Zytglogge clock tower features moving mechanical figures that perform every hour. Bears have long been a symbol of Bern, and the city's riverside Bear Park continues this historic tradition. Bern is also closely associated with Albert Einstein, who lived in the city while developing his theory of special relativity; his former apartment is now open as a museum.
