Images of Germany:
Himmelstreppe at Dusk, Gelsenkirchen

The Himmelstreppe in Gelsenkirchen stands on the top of a former industrial slag heap. Himmelstreppe ("Stairway to Heaven") is a public art installation on the Nordstern spoil tip, the steel staircase rises about 18 meters (60 feet) and forms a dramatic geometric sculpture that appears to lead into the sky. Designed by artist Herman Prigann, it symbolizes the region's transformation from coal mining to cultural landscape. Visitors can climb the steps for panoramic views over the Ruhr area, and the site is freely accessible year-round.
