© Walter Knirr / City of Johannesburg Emmarentia Dam CanoeistEmmarentia Dam is located in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg just east of Johannesburg Botanic Garden. The Botanic Garden and Emmarentia Dam are at the northern edge of the very large Jan van Riebeeck Park.
The dams were built to control flood waters and created the placid lakes. Jan van Riebeeck Park was established in the the 1950s to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Dutch at the Cape.
Emmarentia Dam is popular with canoeists, rowers and windsurfers as well as scores of dog-walkers and weekend picnickers who come to braai on the lovely grassy areas or sample tea and scones at the teahouse. In summer the area plays hosts to a series of Sunset Concerts.
Upmarket hotels in Joburg's northern suburbs aimed at the business traveler include the Hilton Sandton at 138 Rivonia Road, the Protea Balalaika Sandton Hotel at 20 Maude Street, the luxurious Sandton Sun & Towers Intercontinental on the corner of Fifth Street and Alice Lane and the soaring Michelangelo Towers Hotel at 8 Maude Street.
Johannesburg Botanic Garden & Emmarentia Dam are west of the M71 and south of the M30.
