South Africa Travel + Tourism Guide: The Mandela Family Museum

The Mandela Family Museum

One of Soweto's attractions is the former home of Nelson Mandela. It is now open and is called the The Mandela Family Museum.

Nelson Mandela's small house in Orlando West, Soweto, contains a collection of memorabilia, paintings, and photographs of the Mandela family.

There are also gifts that the great man received over the course of his long career.

The house is located at 8115 Ngakane Street. Mandela first moved in 1946 with his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase.

After divorcing, Mandela remarried. His second wife, Winnie Madikizela, moved into the house in 1958.

Until his arrest, in 1962, Mandela spent little time at the house as he was often on the run as a freedom fighter.

Following his release, the future Nobel Prize winner went back to the house for short period. Then he moved into a larger home nearby.

The Mandela Family Museum is open every day from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, call (011) 936-7754.
