Amsterdam ArenA is a stadium of firsts. Having opened in 1996, it became the first ground in the world with an underground motorway running underneath it, and was also the first sporting arena in Europe to have a retractable roof.
Views across the ground are unobstructed and absolutely fantastic.
The surrounding area, ArenA Boulevard is home to many bars, shops and restaurants.
The ground was renamed the Johan Cruyff Arena in 2018 after the club's most famous player. Previously Ajax, the most successful club in The Netherlands, played at the De Meer Stadium (De Meer Stadion) from 1934 until 1996 with some big games taking place at the higher capacity Olympic Stadium (Olympisch Stadion).
De Meer witnessed the glory days of Ajax when the team including Neeskens, Cruyff and Haan won the old European Cup three times in succession in 1971, 1972, and 1973. In addition the team lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1987, the UEFA Cup in 1992 and the Champions League in 1995.
Train
Regular trains run from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Amsterdam Bijmer ArenA, which is a five minute walk from the ground.
Metro
Metro services 50 (from Isolatorweg) and 54 (from Centraal Station) stop at Amsterdam Bijmer ArenA station.
