Johann Sebastian Bach lived in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750. Bach was the Cantor (music instructor) of the Thomasschule at Thomaskirche in the city as well as Director of Music at the Nikolaikirche and the Paulinerkirche. This statue of Bach is at the Thomaskirche, where the composer is buried. The statue was erected in 1908 by local Leipzig sculptor Carl Seffner.
Impressions were taken of Bach's skull and used as a template for shaping the head of the monument.
