Merkur Spiel-Arena is the home ground of Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The 54,600 capacity stadium in Düsseldorf opened in 2004. It replaced the aging, 54,000 capacity Rheinstadion, which was demolished in 2002. Built between 2002 and 2004 the stadium officially opened in 2004.
Though not a stadium used at the 2006 World Cup, Merkur Spiel-Arena has hosted international friendlies featuring host nation Germany as well as teams from other countries such as the USA v Japan friendly here in 2022. During Euro 2024, the stadium will be called "Düsseldorf Arena".
Some may remember the "Heads" events of 1984 in which three lost sculptures of heads by the Italian artist Modigliani were dredged up from a river in Leghorn sending art experts into an ecstatic frenzy, at least one of whom shed tears of joy at the discovery. Later, when some young people admitted to making the heads, by means of a Black & Decker, thus hoaxing the art world, some of the so-called experts still would not believe them and the students had to make another identical head with their trusty drill live on television to prove they were not lying. If Joseph Beuys had had his way, by now art historians would be replaced by dead hares, as the latter understand art better than the former despite being animals .. and dead.
Beuys grew up near Düsseldorf, once started a political party for animals, and was one of the founders of the German Green Party. He was concerned about the environment, held utopian ideals of how society should develop, was sacked from his job as a professor at Düsseldorf Art Academy for occupying the admin offices. Before that, he was a Luftwaffe pilot in WW2, was shot down over the Soviet Union, was rescued by Tartars and was wrapped in animal fats and felt to keep him warm. He washed people's feet. He survived a week living with a coyote in a room in New York. He founded the Free International University.
Fat, felt (and copper) he used extensively in his "actions" [installations into which his personal interaction and debate with audience were entwined]. Examples of environments he created include basalt stones laid down on the ground, furniture, and sledges with rolls of felt and torches. He is considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
