The Frankenstadion (Max-Morlock-Stadion, previously EasyCredit-Stadion for sponsorship reasons) was completed in 1991 and was redeveloped for the 2006 World Cup. The ground is home to FC Nurnberg of the Bundesliga.
Total costs for stadium redevelopment and renovation are estimated at 56 million Euros.
The ground has gone through several name changes. It is now officially the Max-Morlock-Stadion since 2017. When it opened in 1928 it was named the Städtisches Stadion, from 1945 to 1991 Victory Stadium, then Frankenstadion, then easyCredit-Stadion, Grundig Stadion, Stadion Nürnberg and now Max-Morlock-Stadion. The ground hosted the European Cup Winners' Cup final between Rangers and Bayern Munich in 1967 and the infamous 'Battle of Nuremberg' at World Cup 2006 between Portugal and the Netherlands. Russian referee Valentin Ivanov dished out a World Cup record four red cards and 16 yellow, thus setting a new record for cards shown at any FIFA-administered international tournament.
The stadium now has a capacity of 50,000 including over 36,700 seats and standing for in excess of 13,000 fans.
FC Nurnberg date from 1900 and are nicknamed simply Der Club (The Club). Their glory days are in the past, however. The Club has won 9 German Championship titles (1920, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1936, 1948, 1961, 1968) and 4 DFB-Pokal (German Cup) titles (1935, 1939, 1962, 2007). They were dominant pre-Bundesliga and won the Bundesliga in 1968, shortly before being relegated. Some famous players to have represented the club include Famous 1. FC Nürnberg players include club legend and 1954 World Cup winner Max Morlock, goalkeeper Andreas Köpke (voted the greatest goalkeeper in the club's history), and Slovakian Marek Mintál, aka 'Phantom' who is beloved by fans. Stefan Reuter, Heinz Strehl, giant Czech forward Jan Koller and Ferdinand Wenauer, alongside modern-era talents such as Ilkay Gündogan and Stefan Kießling are other fan favorites. Thomas Brunner holds the record for the most appearances for the club with 402 between 1982 and 1996.
The Max-Morlock-Stadion is generally considered accessible, featuring 95 wheelchair spaces in the main grandstand, dedicated seating for blind/partially sighted fans, and step-free access.
