Capacity

Stadium of Hamburg (new) - 50,000 capacity for World Cup 2006. Presently the arena can host 57,000 spectators for league matches. This capacity includes both seated and standing areas, making it the eighth largest stadium in Germany. For some international matches, the capacity is slightly lower (approx. 51,500).

History

Inaugurated for the Germany v Greece international in 2000 the new stadium was constructed on the site of SV Hamburg's old Volksparkstadion ground.

The pitch was rotated and the stands completely rebuilt at an estimated cost of 97 million Euros.

The stadium was also a venue stadium for Euro 2024. It hosted a total of five matches at Euro 2024: four group stage matches and one quarter-final. They were as follows:

16 June: Poland 1-2 Netherlands (Group D)
19 June: Croatia 2-2 Albania (Group B)
22 June: Georgia 1-1 Czech Republic (Group F)
26 June: Czech Republic 1-2 Turkey (Group F)
5 July: Portugal 0-0 France (Quarter-final, 3-5 penalties)

SV Hamburg

The club were founded in 1887 (as SC Germania, officially merging into Hamburger SV in 1919) and are nicknamed Die Rothosen (The Red Shorts). They are also historically known as Der Dino (The Dinosaur) due to their long-standing tenure as the only team to have played every season in the Bundesliga prior to their relegation.

Some famous players to wear the shirt include Ballon d'Or winners Kevin Keegan and Franz Beckenbauer (who played 28 games between 1980 and 1982), along with club icons Manfred Kaltz, Horst Hrubesch, and Felix Magath.

Ex-Liverpool striker Kevin Keegan nicknamed 'Mighty Mouse' by local fans played 90 Bundesliga matches and scored 32 goals for Hamburger SV between 1977 and 1980. Across all official competitions, including the DFB-Pokal and European matches, he made over 100 appearances for the club, winning two Ballon d'Or awards during his stay.

Other famous players who have played in the Baltic port city include Rafael van der Vaart, South Korean forward Heung-min Son, Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, and German international Jerome Boateng.

HSV has won the German national championship six times (1922-23, 1927-28, 1959-60, 1978-79, 1981-82, 1982-83), the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) three times, and the European Cup (now Champions League) once. Their most successful period was from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, which included winning the 1982-83 European Cup 1-0 against Juve under coach Ernst Happel with a goal from Felix Magath and the 1976-77 European Cup Winners' Cup with Magath again on the scoresheet.

Volksparkstadion is considered highly accessible for wheelchair users, featuring barrier-free access, step-free routes to rooms, and dedicated accessible toilets. The stadium offers accessible seating (17% of capacity as of 2024), special parking at "Parking Gelb" (pre-booked required), and accessible shuttle buses from Stellingen S-Bahn station to Entrance B.

Guided tours of the Volksparkstadion allow visitors to explore behind-the-scenes areas like the changing rooms, player tunnel, and the pitch. Train:
S3 or S21 lines to Stellingen (Volksparkstadion) and take a free shuttle from there. Around 40 minutes from the city center or S1 to Othsmarschen and a shuttle bus.

Bus:
Routes #188 or #286 to Stadionstrasse, or #111 and #187 to Trabrennbahn.
