J-League News - Japanese Football
Japan's J-League is the top division of Japanese soccer. The J-League began in 1993 and presently consists of two leagues - J1 and J2 - with 18 teams in J-1 and 19 teams in J-2.
The bottom 2 teams from J1 are relegated to J2 with the top two J2 gaining automatic promotion to J1. The third placed J2 team contests a two-legged play off with the third from bottom J1 team to decide the final spot.
Japanese teams also compete in the Asian Champions League against other teams from such countries as Australia, South Korea and China.
