The 24 competing teams are divided into 6 groups of four teams.

The top two teams from each group progress to the Round of 16 plus the 4 four best third-placed teams from the six groups.

Venues

Stadiums to be used include Al Bayt Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Education City Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, and Khalifa International Stadium.

Group D contains pre-tournament favorites Japan, plus 2007 winners Iraq, Indonesia and Vietnam, the two latter countries also both venue nations for the 2007 tournament.

Asian Cup

The Asian Cup is the Asian Football Confederation's premier international tournament and is now held every four years.

The 2023 Asian Cup takes place in Qatar which also hosted the event in 2011.

The winner of the Asian Cup takes part in the Confederations Cup.
