World Cup 2026 Stadiums: Gillette Stadium (Boston Stadium)
Gillette Stadium, Boston
Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts opened in 2002 and is the home of the NFL's New England Patriots and New England Revolution of the MLS.
It is one of six stadiums in the eastern region of North America along with Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) in Canada, Atlanta Stadium, Miami Stadium, Philadelphia Stadium (Lincoln Financial Field aka The Linc), and New York New Jersey Stadium in the USA. The stadium in Boston is only one of three World Cup venues of the eleven arenas in the USA that host an MLS team - the other two are Seattle and Atlanta.
During the 2026 tournament it will be known as Boston Stadium due to FIFA regulations on sponsorship names.
The stadium will stage 7 games in total during the 2026 World Cup.
These are:
- June 13: Group C - Haiti vs Scotland
- June 16: Group I - Iraq vs Norway
- June 19: Group C - Scotland vs Morocco
- June 23: Group L - England vs Ghana
- June 26: Group I - Norway vs France
- June 29: Round of 32 match - Germany v Paraguay
- July 9: Quarterfinal - France v Morocco
Capacity, History & Design
The stadium first opened in 2002 replacing the nearby Foxboro Stadium and was completed at a cost of $325 million. Foxboro Stadium hosted six games at World Cup 1994.
The stadium was recently renovated in 2023 at a further cost of $250m including the addition of a lighthouse overlooking the arena in a nod to the area's maritime heritage.
Natural grass has been installed for the tournament as per FIFA specifications, temporarily replacing the artificial turf used normally.
Boston Stadium will have a capacity of 64,146 for the World Cup.
Uses
The stadium is home to the NFL's New England Patriots and New England Revolution of the MLS.
In addition the stadium has hosted college American football, lacrosse, wrestling and even ice hockey.
For soccer, the stadium has staged MLS games, international friendlies involving the USA men's and women's teams, World Cup qualifying matches and games at the Concacaf Gold Cup (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2015), as well as 2016 Copa América Centenario and 2024 Copa América fixtures. Most recently France beat Brazil 2-1 here in a friendly in March, 2026.
As a music venue the stadium has seen many big names perform in Boston such as Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Green Day, Guns N' Roses, One Direction, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Taylor Swift, U2 and others. BTS are booked for August 2026.
New England Revolution
The Revolution was one of the MLS' ten charter teams of MLS and has competed in the league since its inception in 1996. The club captured their first major trophy by winning the 2007 U.S. Open Cup, followed by the 2008 North American SuperLiga title the next year. In 2021, they earned their first Supporters' Shield. Despite reaching the MLS Cup finals five times - in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2014 - the Revolution hold the record for the most appearances by a club that has never won the MLS Cup.
Names associated with The Revs known to a wider, international audience will include former Liverpool player and now ESPN pundit Steve Nicol, who coached the team for a record of 10 years from 2002-2011 and former Ipswich and England striker Paul Mariner, who was part of the coaching staff at the time.
Clint Dempsey was on the books in New England under Nicol before his move to Fulham and Craven Cottage in 2006.
Other notable names include Taylor Twellman (2002-2010), who is widely regarded as the club's greatest striker. Twellman is the all-time leading goalscorer at the club with 101 league goals.
Joe-Max Moore (1996-1999, 2003-2004) was also a prolific scorer and three-time team MVP who also played in England with Everton.
Valencia-born, Spanish midfielder Carles Gil (2019-) won the 2021 MLS MVP and is the franchise leader in assists, leading the team to their first Supporters' Shield. He has also scored over 50 goals for the club and is still going strong at age 33.
Bruce Arena (2019-2023) is the MLS' all-time winningest coach and led the Revolution to the 2021 Supporters' Shield, setting a record for most points in a regular season, with 73.
Frank Stapleton was the club's manager in their first ever MLS season in 1996 with a record of 15 wins and 17 losses.
