How many World Cup 2026 venue cities and stadiums are in Mexico?

Mexico has three of the 16 World Cup 2026 venue cities. They are Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Canada has two (Vancouver (BC Place) and Toronto (BMO Field) and the USA eleven.

Guadalajara

Is Guadalajara Safe For World Cup 2026?

The killing of Mexican drug lord Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes in February 2026, and retaliatory violence by his Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) in and around Guadalajara, has raised safety concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup in Jalisco state. The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, insists there are "no risks."

Monterrey

Monterrey is the capital of the state of Nuevo León and one of Mexico's most important industrial and business centers. The city has about 1.1 million residents, with roughly 5.3 million people in the greater metropolitan area. Thus Monterrey is the third largest city in Mexico but the population of its greater urban area ranks it second on the list after Mexico City.

Founded in 1596, Monterrey grew steadily during the colonial era but expanded rapidly in the late 19th and 20th centuries as it became a hub for steel, cement, and manufacturing in northern Mexico.

Surrounded by dramatic mountains such as Cerro de la Silla, Monterrey offers attractions including the riverside park Paseo Santa Lucía and the scenic Parque Fundidora, a former steel foundry turned cultural complex.

Monterrey lies only about 220 kilometers (135 miles) from the USA-Mexico border at Laredo, Texas. This is roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive, making it one of Mexico's closest major cities to the United States.

What are the World Cup 2026 Stadiums in Mexico?

The three stadiums in Mexico for World Cup 2026 are Estadio Azteca (Mexico City), Estadio Akron (Guadalajara) and Estadio BBVA (Monterrey).

Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca (Mexico City) - 87,523 capacity.

Estadio Azteca is Mexico's most iconic football stadium, located in the southern part of Mexico City, with a seating capacity of over 80,000. Opened in 1966, it is one of the few stadiums in the world to have hosted two FIFA World Cup finals (1970 and 1986) and serves as the home ground of Club América and the Mexican national team. Two icons of the world game have lifted the World Cup at the stadium, Pele in 1970 and Maradona in 1986. The opening game of the 2026 tournament Mexico v South Africa will take place at the Azteca on June 11 (the first stadium to host three FIFA World Cup opening matches). The ground will also host two other group matches plus a Round of 32 fixture and a Round of 16 game. During the regular Mexican soccer season it is known as Estadio Banorte for sponsorship reasons.

The stadium will stage 5 games in total during the 2026 World Cup.

Estadio Akron (Guadalajara) - 49,850 capacity.

Estadio Akron is a modern football stadium located in Zapopan, part of the greater Guadalajara metropolitan area. Opened in 2010, it seats around 49,000 spectators and is the home of Liga MX club C.D. Guadalajara (Chivas). The stadium has hosted major international matches, including games during the 2011 Pan American Games and Copa Libertadores. Its former names include Estadio Omnilife and Estadio Chivas. During World Cup 2026 it will be known as Estadio Guadalajara and will stage four group games.

Estadio BBVA (Estadio Monterrey for World Cup 2026) is a state-of-the-art football stadium in Guadalupe, part of the greater Monterrey metro area. Opened in 2015, it seats about 53,000 spectators and is home to C.F. Monterrey (Rayados). Known for its striking mountain backdrop near Cerro de la Silla, the stadium has hosted Liga MX finals, international matches, and major concerts. It is known as "El Gigante de Acero" ('The steel giant'). During the 2026 tournament the ground will be called Estadio Monterrey and will host four matches, three group games and one Round of 32 fixture.
