UK Stadiums: Tarmac Silverlands Stadium, Buxton, Derbyshire
Silverlands Stadium (Tarmac Silverlands Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is in the spa town of Buxton in Derbyshire. It is the home of football club Buxton FC (The Bucks). It is the highest ground in England at a height of 1,020 feet (approximately 310 meters) above sea level.
Club & Stadium History
The Bucks were formed in 1877 as part of Buxton Cricket Club to provide training for the cricketers over the winter.
The ground opened in 1884 on land owned by the then-captain, Frank Drewry. The first competitive match at the stadium was against local rivals Bakewell won 2-0 by the hosts.
The team has never played in the first four divisions of English professional football but have competed in the Manchester League, Cheshire County League, the Northern Premier League and now the National League North.
The highest attendance at Silverlands is 6,000 vs Barrow, FA Cup first round, 1962-63.
Capacity
The ground has a capacity of around 4,000 with seating in the main stand for around 500 spectators. In 2024 Buxton FC applied to High Peak Borough Council to replace this main stand with a new 1,000-capacity all-seater stand.
Opposite is the Scratching Shed or 'Shed' with standing room only. Behind each goal is uncovered standing at the eastern end and the Railway End Terrace at the western end.
The playing surface is a modern 4G artificial pitch with pylon floodlights.
Access - Getting There
The ground is a 15-minute walk south of Buxton Station. It is located in a mainly residential area near Buxton Police Station. Buxton can be reached by train from both Piccadilly Station in central Manchester and Stockport Station. The 199 bus also runs between Manchester Airport and Buxton via Stockport, Hazel Grove, High Lane, Disley, Furness Vale, Whaley Bridge, and Chapel-en-le-Frith.
By car drive south from Manchester and Stockport on the A6 past Lyme Park in Disley. Additionally, Sheffield is a 50-minute drive northwest on the A57.

Some recommended places to stay in Buxton include the five-star Ensana Buxton Crescent Hotel and the historic Old Hall Hotel. Also well-recommended are the Portland Hotel, the Palace Hotel or the Best Western Plus Buxton Lee Wood Hotel.
The Portland Hotel offers traditional furnishings and a full English breakfast. The Palace Hotel dates from Victorian times and includes a swimming pool and a restaurant. The Westminster Hotel overlooks the Pavilion Gardens and is a family-run establishment.
