Seokguram Grotto (석굴암)

Like nearby Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was built by the same King Kim Dae-Seong in honor of his parents from a former life.
The grotto is an artificial stone structure made of granite, located on the eastern peak of Mt. Toham outside Gyeongju. Inside the domed main hall is one of the world's finest shrines to the Buddha, surrounded by bodhisattvas and his guardians.

The 3.5 meter tall Buddha is seated on a 1.34 meter tall lotus pedestal flanked surrounded by fifteen panels of bodhisattvas, Hindu gods and various Buddhist saints along with statues placed in the niches along the rotunda wall.
The statue is shielded by a glass panel and photography is prohibited.
The views from the location of the grotto are impressive stretching, on a clear day, as far as the sea. Sunrise is a popular time for people to take in the view.

Bulguksa & Seokguram Access
Bulguksa is best reached from Gyeongyu 16 km away by buses #10 and #11 from the city center. Seokguram is a further 3 km from here on foot or take a bus to the ticket booth.
