Ulsan is a major industrial city located in the southeastern part of South Korea. It is the seventh-largest metropolis in the country and serves as an industrial powerhouse of South Korea, particularly known for its focus on heavy industry and manufacturing.

The city is a key center for heavy industry and is often referred to as the "industrial capital of South Korea." It is home to major industrial complexes, including the Ulsan Industrial District, which houses various manufacturing facilities, refineries, and chemical plants.

Ulsan is a major industrial port city with a large expatriate population involved in industry and English-language teaching.

Attractions include Jaengsaengpo Whale Museum which exhibits the history of Ulsan as a whaling port in the 19th century and before. Samsandong is Ulsan's upmarket shopping area and includes the Lotte & Samsung department stores and the Lotte Ferris Wheel - an icon of the city. Seongnamdong is the old downtown area with a number of good bars.

Ulsan Grand Park (울산대공원)

Ulsan Grand Park is the city's green lungs with cycle rental available. There is a theme park, a large swimming pool, various types of sports fields as well as several pleasant picnic areas. In this area near the soccer stadium are also Ulsan Museum and Ulsan Science Museum.

Ulsan is well served for cinemas. Jeongja Beach offers the Cinemabeach Automobile Theater and the Lotte Cinema in Samsangdong is a large multiplex.

The remains of a Japanese castle built by the invading army of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 16th century can be seen at Jinha Beach, south of the city.

Festivals in Ulsan

Ulsan has a number of interesting festivals during the year. These include the Ulsan Onggi Festival dedicated to the local earthenware, the Ulsan Summer Festival with lots of K-Pop in July and August and the Ganjeolgot Sunrise Festival over New Year. Ganjeolgot Cape in Ulsan is the first place in Korea to see the sunrise.

Transport

Ulsan airport has flights to both Seoul and Jeju. The KTX now stops at Ulsan Station on the outskirts of the city with connections to Busan, Miryang and Dongdaegu (for Daegu). The old Ulsan station was renamed Taehwa River Station. City buses include white express buses and yellow regular buses.

Impressive football-specific 42,086 capacity stadium close to Ulsan Grand Park and built by....Hyundai! Ulsan World Cup Stadium (Munsu Stadium) is reached by shuttle bus from the town center. The stadium (aka Big Crown) is home to Ulsan Hyundai FC. Surrounding the stadium is Munsu Park with a pleasant lake, fountains and cycling tracks. Ulsan Hyundai FC has a strong fan base in the region.
