The 2016 European Championships in France will be held June 10 to July 10, 2016.
For the first time, the European Championships will have 24 teams, having been expanded from the 16-team format that has been in use since 1996. We discuss whether this has diluted the quality of the tournament and the qualification matches.
France automatically qualify as hosts.
The matches will be played in ten stadiums in nine host cities: Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris, St-Etienne and Toulouse.
The group winners, runners-up, and the best third-placed team (with the results against the sixth-placed team discarded) directly qualify for the finals. The eight remaining third-placed teams will play two-legged play-offs to decide the last four places for the finals.
