Capacity, History & Design
The stadium first opened in 2017 was completed at a cost of $1.6 billion. It replaced the Georgia Dome which dated from 1992.
Supposedly inspired by The Pantheon in Rome, the impressive arena has a retractable roof made up of eight semi-transparent, triangular panels. The 'halo' video screen under the dome is 327 meters in length and powered by 37 million LEDs. The board wraps entirely around the stadium's huge roof opening. It gives every fan a clear view of replays, scores, and statistics.
Natural grass has been installed for the tournament as per FIFA specifications, temporarily replacing the artificial turf used normally in the arena. This natural grass has been specially grown in turf farms in the USA and shipped to the stadium to be carefully tendered and nurtured before the big kick off. Indeed, Fifa has invested over $5 million on research on the playing surfaces for the World Cup.
Atlanta Stadium will have a capacity of 67,382 for the World Cup in 2026.
Uses
The stadium is home to the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United of the MLS.
In addition the stadium has hosted college and high school American football, and is a possible venue for the men's and women's Rugby World Cups in 2031 and 2033.
As a soccer venue, the stadium stages Atlanta United's MLS games, and has hosted international friendlies involving the USA men's team and Mexico among others, international club friendlies (Juventus, Chelsea and Newcastle United have all played at the Mercedes Benz), and matches at the 2024 Copa América (including the opening match) and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
As a concert venue, the stadium has seen the usual big names perform in Atlanta: Beyoncé, Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and other acts.
Atlanta United
Atlanta United was founded in 2014 and began playing in Major League Soccer in 2017. The club quickly became a successful and popular team, winning the MLS Cup in 2018, the U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup in 2019, and reaching several playoff campaigns in its early years. Recent form has been more patchy after the club's heady start to life in the MLS.
Some of the club's most famous players include Paraguay international Miguel Almirón, Venezuelan striker Josef Martínez, and Argentine playmaker Thiago Almada, who was part of the Argentina squad as a late call-up that won the World Cup in 2022 while playing for the club. In doing so, Almada now at Atlético Madrid, became the first active Major League Soccer (MLS) player to win the tournament.
Atlanta United managers have included Tata Martino, Frank de Boer, former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze, and ex-Celtic boss Ronny Deila, who was succeeded by the returning Tata Martino in 2026 in an attempt to restore past glories.
Access
The closest commercial airport to Mercedes-Benz Stadium is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), located about 10 to 12 miles south of the venue.
Unlike many of the stadiums at World Cup 2026, the Mercedes Benz Stadium is within the city of Atlanta itself rather than in the outlying suburbs. It is a relatively short distance west of the main, downtown area.
To get to the stadium take the MARTA train system and exit at either the GWCC/CNN Center or Vine City stations. Either station is within a 5-minute walk to the stadium.
From Atlanta Airport take the Red or Gold line North to Five Points Station. From there, transfer to a Westbound Blue or Green line train and ride one stop to the GWCC/CNN Center Station.
A standard one-way MARTA fare is $2.50.
Address: 1 AMB Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30313, USA.
