Netherdale (aka the 3G Arena, Netherdale) in Galashiels, Scottish Borders, Scotland, is the home ground of Gala Fairydean Rovers FC. The club presently compete in the Lowland League, the fifth tier of football in Scotland.
The club was formed by a merger of professional Gala Fairydean and amateur Gala Rovers.
The ground is part of a larger sports complex in Galashiels that also includes an adjacent rugby union stadium that played host to one match of the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
Capacity & Grandstand
The small stadium has a capacity for 2,000 spectators and is best known for its grandstand which dates from 1964 and has 500 seats.
The Category A listed grandstand is the work of English architect Peter Womersley in the modernist style. It was recently renovated by Reiach and Hall Architects. Womersley (1923 - 1993) lived in the Scottish Borders near Melrose and was responsible for several outstanding buildings in Scotland.
The playing surface is 3D artificial turf with distinctive floodlighting.
Club History
Gala Fairydean Rovers FC was founded in 2013 after a merger of Gala Fairydean and Gala Rovers.
Gala Fairydean, established in 1894, have played at Netherdale since 1929. Initially Gala Rovers were the reserve team of Gala Fairydean and formed in 1907.
The team are nicknamed "GFR" and play in red shirts and black shorts.
Access - Getting There
Getting to Galashiels from Edinburgh is straightforward by both train and bus. The most convenient option is the Borders Railway, which runs directly from Edinburgh's Waverley Station to Galashiels, with a journey time of around 1 hour.
Trains typically run every 30 minutes during peak times and hourly in the evenings, offering scenic views of the Scottish Borders along the way.
Alternatively, several bus services, such as the Borders Buses X95, operate between Edinburgh and Galashiels. The bus journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, depending on traffic, and departs from the Edinburgh Bus Station. From Galashiels Station the ground is a 25-minute walk or 15 minutes by local bus.
