Bilino Polje Stadium is the home ground of Bosnian Premier League club NK Čelik.

The 15,000 capacity stadium in Zenica opened in 1972 and staged Bosnia and Herzegovina's very first international match against Albania back in 1996.

The stadium has something of a reputation as a fortress for the home nation with Bosnia and Herzegovina rarely losing here. Though in the game featured here, 'The Dragons' were on the wrong end of a 2-1 result to Germany in October 2024.

The stadium is one of two stadiums used by the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. The other is the approximately 13,000 capacity Grbavica Stadium in Sarajevo.

The Club: NK Čelik

NK Čelik were once a very successful domestic team and have won the national championship in three consecutive seasons (1994 - 1997). Čelik means 'steel' and refers to the predominance of the steel industry in the city (see below). They are also the only fan-owned football club in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the club have faced severe financial difficulties of late and now play in the second tier of Bosnian soccer.

Access - Getting There

Zenica, in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, is an industrial and economic center, known primarily for its steel industry. Situated on the Bosna River, Zenica dates back to Roman times.

However, it grew significantly during the Austro-Hungarian period and later under Yugoslav industrialization policies. The city is now home to the ArcelorMittal Zenica steel plant, one of the largest in the Balkans. Despite its industrial character, Zenica also has cultural and educational institutions, including the University of Zenica, well-known for its Faculty of Metallurgy. The city has faced environmental challenges due to its heavy industry, making sustainable development a focus in recent years.

Zenica is well-connected by both train and bus, making it accessible from other towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina. By train, Zenica is on the main railway line between Sarajevo and Doboj, with services operated by Željeznice FBiH (Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina). The train journey from Sarajevo to Zenica takes around 2 hours, with scenic views of the Bosna River valley along the way.

Alternatively, the city's central bus station has frequent connections to Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, and other towns. The bus journey from Sarajevo typically takes about 90 minutes. Both train and bus stations are centrally located, making onward travel from Zenica pretty straightforward.

Nearby Hotels

Zenica offers a decent range of hotel and guesthouse options.

Some recommendations in the town include the Hotel Dubrovnik with a restaurant and terrace.

The Hotel Zenica is next to the Dzananovic shopping centre and very close to the ZEPS Fair in Zenica.

Other options include the Hotel Fontana with a bar and restaurant, the Petra and Hotel Rezime, with three stars.
