Optus Stadium on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia, is just minutes from the heart of the city.

Known as Perth Stadium for international cricket matches, the ground hosts mainly Australian rules football and cricket, as well as both rugby league and union. Optus Stadium does stage the occasional soccer match including the 2019 A-League Grand Final, friendlies and international matches.

The stadium has a seating capacity of 60,000, making it the third-largest stadium in Australia. Designed with a 'fans first' approach, it offers unobstructed views from all seats, two giant 340-square-meter video screens, and a lightweight fabric roof covering 85% of the seating area.

History

The construction of Optus Stadium began in late 2014 and was completed in December 2017, with the official opening held on January 21, 2018. The project was delivered under a public-private partnership, with a total cost of approximately AUD 1.6 billion, including associated infrastructure. The stadium's design, by architects Hassell, HKS, and Cox, reflects Western Australia's geological features through its striking bronze facade.

Capacity

Optus Stadium's standard capacity is 60,000, but it can be expanded to 65,000 for rectangular sports and up to 70,000 for concerts. The venue is renowned for its 'fans first' facilities, including a 360-degree lower concourse, premium seating options adjacent to the field, and state-of-the-art LED lighting that illuminates the roof in the home team's colors at night.

Uses

Optus Stadium serves as the home ground for Western Australia's two Australian Football League (AFL) teams - the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers. It also hosts the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL) and the Western Australia cricket team. The stadium has been the venue for various international cricket matches, including Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 (T20) games. Additionally, it accommodates rugby union and league matches, A-League and other soccer events including international matches, friendlies, as well as major concerts.

In February 2026, Optus Stadium is reportedly set to host a regular-season Serie A match between AC Milan and Como 1907, due to scheduling conflicts at San Siro, which will be used for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics. This would mark the first time a major European league regular-season game is played overseas. (*Update - The AC Milan v Como game will now not go ahead and has been canceled).
