York Road in Maidenhead, Berkshire is the home ground of semi-professional side Maidenhead United of the National League South, the sixth tier of football in England.
Stadium History
York Road is recognized by both The Football Association (FA) and FIFA as the oldest senior association football ground in the world that has been continuously used by the same club, having been home to Maidenhead since 1871.
The ground was originally the home of Maidenhead Cricket Club, and with their consent, the football club played their first match at York Road on 16 February 1871, shortly after its founding in 1870, against Marlow. Officially known as the Desborough Sports Ground, the venue is named after William Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough, a local sports patron who sold the land to the club in 1921.
Capacity & Stands
The football ground has a capacity of around 4,500 with seating for around 550 spectators in the Railway Stand. The Bell Street end of the ground is a covered terrace, opposite is the East Terrace with some cover available.
The ground has pylon-style floodlighting and the Stripes Bar serves beer and other drinks on match days. Try their locally-brewed Stripes Lager and Magpie Pale Ale.
Maidenhead United
Maidenhead United are nicknamed 'The Magpies', and like Newcastle United, play in black and white stripes.
The club were formed in 1870 and in 1871-72 they were one of the fifteen clubs to compete in the very first FA Cup.
The team were National League South champions in the 2016-17 season and FA Cup quarter-finalists three times in succession back in the 1870s!
Former West Ham United midfielder Alan Devonshire is in his third spell as manager of The Magpies and has taken charge of the team in over 800 games.
Access - Getting There
Maidenhead Station on the Elizabeth Line and Marlow Branch Line is 5-10 minutes west of the ground on foot. There are trains from the station to Abbey Wood, London Paddington, Didcot and Reading.
There is no parking available at York Road Stadium.
