Stadium History

The site of Withdean Stadium was originally developed as a tennis center by the Lawn Tennis Association in 1936.

After World War II the site was expanded as Brighton Olympic Stadium, still largely concerned with tennis but now with added facilities. This venture proved a flop and was replaced in the 1950s by an athletics stadium with floodlights.

In 1980, local hero and Olympic champion Steve Ovett opened the all-weather running track.

From 1999 to 2011 it was the home ground of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C following their departure from the Goldstone Ground and the construction of their present home - the Amex Stadium.

Today, the ground is home to AFC Vardeanians of the Southern Combination Premier Division (SCFL), the 9th tier of football in England.

Capacity & Stands

The football ground has a capacity of around 6,926 with accommodation in the main (North) stand for around 1,350 spectators.

The Withdean Sports Complex as a whole also includes four 3G all-weather soccer pitches, tennis and squash courts, and a gymnasium.

Access - Getting There

The closest railway station is Preston Park Station, which is about a 20-minute walk away. Preston Park is one stop and four minutes north from Brighton Station.

Brighton has Southern trains to London Victoria, Chichester, Eastbourne, Portsmouth and Southampton Central.

In addition, Brighton Station has Thameslink trains to Bedford, Cambridge, Gatwick Airport, London Bridge and Luton.

Alternatively, the 271 bus from St Peter's Church to Crawley Bus Station stops at Tongdean Lane East from where it is a 4 minute walk to Withdean.
